Rigor Product Suggestions

  1. Allow users to set custom times for frequency intervals

Right now Rigor has a set of intervals to choose from to run checks, e.g. 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and hour, but it would be nice if users could add their own custom time intervals, e.g. 35 minutes or 40 minutes.

  2. Make it easy to batch create uptime checks in bulk

Sometimes users may have many URLs for Uptime checks that they'd like to create in bulk with the same settings. We should make it easy to import or bulk create uptime checks based on URLs.

Makes total sense. There is another request for automatically creating uptime checks from a list of servers/services pulled from AWS. These are related in that doing one gives us significant progress in the other

  3. DNS Resolution Time at the Check level instead of just the Run level

It may be useful to roll DNS Resolution Time data up to the Check level, as with Response Time and Availability. Currently this data is only available down at the individual Run level, making it tedious to get a feel for how the DNS resolution of a given URL is performing, or if it's having systemic problems.

This could also be helped by making Run-level data easier to query via the API. Currently, you can only get one Run's data at a time, and to do that requires having a Run ID. There is no programmatic way to get a…

  4. Extract custom data/metrics from a run (Was: Extract data from HTTP response headers and/or the response body)

There should be a way to extract data from HTTP response headers and/or the response body for use as an additional "dimension" for performance/reporting. E.g.: for each response, extract and store the X-Server-ID header from the response. We should then be able to filter and/or report on that field in performance charts and reports.

So then, i.e. on the performance history graph, I should be able to see each value of the X-Server-ID as a different color dot, etc. Or at the very least select which value I'd like to plot individual just like the "Locations" drop down allows.

  5. New Test Locations: New York City and Boston

It would be nice if we could add some more locations from these big East Coast cities.

These two locations are on our radar for when we expand our monitoring network locations.

  6. Add HTML capture link to Email Template alert data variables

Some Rigor users might want to easily click to HTML capture from the email template. It would be great if we had something like an alert.html_url variable for custom email templates.

  7. Notifications: Notify only if check fails from all (not more than one) locations

Right now we have the ability to disable location-specific notifications but there isn't a great way to check for all locations down vs. more than one location down.

It would be nice to have this option.

This could be a helpful feature. Would want to better understand what happens when there is a large number of locations, but the interval between checks is long: sounds like someone could miss an outage for potentially a hour or more.

Will reach out to Melanie to better understand the use case

  8. Add Clear fields option to uptime checks

We currently offer the ability to Clear fields on Real Browser checks. It would be nice if we included this same option for multi-step Uptime checks.

  9. Custom range table filter: add hours for more granular views

Right we can filter by 'last 4 hours' but we want to see a series of check runs that happened more than a day ago the custom range option doesn't allow us to get more granular that 24 hours.

We should add starting hours and ending hours to start date and end date on custom ranges.

  10. Auto pausing alerts based on one or two alert

We have many monitorings monitoring our web site's up time and functonality. It would be great if we could set our ping test monitor and our homepage check monitor as master monitorings. If these monitors are both failing then all of the other monitors for the website are paused automatically or muted. We had an outage this morning at 12:30am for 3 hours. All of our monitors were going off which became annoying as we were trying to fix the issue.

I really like this idea, thanks Steve. Basically, if multiple checks are all testing different aspects of the thing, and a few “key” checks start failing and sending alerts, you probably don’t want to receive a flood of alerts.

We are in the currently collecting use cases for a reworking of our entire notification/alerting system. This seems like a good use case to include in our scope

  11. Adding another option in the dropdown list for 'Blackout Periods'

Add "Bi-Weekly" to the frequency droptdown list under Blackout Periods.

  12. RBC: Add option to upload images with actions

It would be nice to be able to upload images or files via Real Browser Checks. This could be useful for sites that require applications or images to upload as part of an application.

  13. Specify Default Time Period for graphs/results chart

For example … I really want to see the
last 24 hours, not just the last 8, but 8 is the default. I’d like to be
able to set my account to default to 24 hours.

The Settings for my account would be a good place to manage preferences like this.

We are reviewing ways to have time periods be sticky, and apply to all graphs as you move through the app. Definitely interested in learning more of your use cases

  14. Content Check: Filter Content Check links by 'results', and bulk ignore

The 'ignore' option on our Content Check is awesome. It would be great if we could also filter the table by 'results' > select all with similar results > and ignore en masse.

Totally agree. Basically you want a way to select multiple checks in the table and then mark all of them as ignore, similar to the in-table-bulk-operations that Rigor Optimization provides.

There is a larger need to move bulk actions like this out of Monitoring “Bulk Edit” page and into individual tables, but this could be a good place to start

  15. Add a button to test alerts/notifications for checks

It would be nice to make sure that a check is configured properly, and we can send a sample alert to make sure all the alerting works as expected.

  16. Import server list/ports from Amazon AWS and auto create checks

We spin up EC2 instances often. It would be useful to have a connector that pulls in a list of web servers and auto-creates a monitoring check for each instance (rather than having to manually create a check for each new server that we add).

This is a great idea. Essentially we can pull a list of active services (and possibly see their open ports by looking at security groups) and automatically create checks for them.

Thumbtack was interested in this too

  17. Ability to sign in with Google Account

So you don't have to remember another username/password. Would also SSO into the help and ideas forum.

This is a great idea! Especially as we move to unifying the login between Monitoring and Optimization. And we have already built internal apps like the Tools portal that use Google Apps authentication…
